Working Heartily As For The Lord

By Hugh Whelchel

Reading

“Whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.  You are serving the Lord Christ.”  Col. 3:23-24

Reflection

It’s easy to understand how a missionary can impact God’s kingdom, how an author can write a distinctly Christian book, and even how a politician can implement God-honoring policies.

But do you view your time in the workplace as your unique way of honoring God? Is there a Christian way to wash windows, keep records, or land an airplane?  Colossians 3:23-24 suggests that there is when it tells believers to serve the Lord in whatever they do.

Martin Luther echoes this by saying, “The Christian shoemaker does his Christian duty not by putting little crosses on the shoes, but by making good shoes, because God is interested in good craftsmanship.”

While a Christian’s work may look similar to that of an atheist in certain professions, the difference lies in the attitude toward the work

For example, the Christian who works as cashier at a grocery store can serve his neighbor by going out of his way provide excellent customer service. By affirming the value of each customer he helps, he is working to further God’s kingdom. How might a Christian use his position as a public servant as a daily opportunity to serve the Lord?

Do you see your faith and your work as separate, or are you dedicating your entire live to Christ’s kingdom? Let us strive to find ways to honor God in whatever we do.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the diverse set gifts and talents that you have given us, as well as the opportunities we have to use them for your glory and the good of others.  Forgive me for the times that I have envied the talents and careers of others rather than focusing on the specific tasks to which you have called me. Help me to recognize my own calling and to see the connection between your kingdom and my work so that I learn to serve you in all things, including my job. For I know that my reward ultimately comes from you and not from men. Amen.
