About Christian Legal Society of Birmingham

The Vision or purpose of Christian Legal Society of Birmingham is to glorify God by:

  • Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to members of the legal profession in the city of Birmingham and the surrounding area through prayer and leadership;
  • Serving members of the legal profession through fellowship, encouragement, and prayer, helping them to attain God’s best for their professional lives; and
  • Fostering and fulfilling the vision of the Christian Legal Society national organization.

We seek to accomplish our Vision solely through the grace and power of our Lord Jesus Christ by:

  • Prayer for each other and for our city . Ephesians 6:18. Recognizing that we are nothing without Christ (John 15:5) and that He has given us great authority and power to come before God the Father, we will pray in the Spirit continually for the lawyers in our city and for the city itself.
  • Fellowship. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; Romans 15:5-6. Through periodic meetings we will seek to create a network of believers within our profession, so that we may identify, strengthen, and help one another as we fulfill God’s purpose for our professional lives.
  • Encouragement. Hebrews 10:25. Through periodic Bible Study, prayer, and discussion of the struggles facing lawyers today, we will seek to fight the disillusionment that plagues our profession, restore the vision and hope that comes from God through His Holy Spirit, and build one another up, renewing our faith and spirit in Christ.
  • Leadership. Colossians 3:23, Philippians 2:5-7, John 13:1-17. Believing that as Christians and attorneys we have a twofold capacity to accomplish great things, we will seek to become individuals who lead in godliness through work, attitude, and service.

Christian Legal Society of Birmingham is an association of Christian lawyers in the greater Birmingham area. Although Christian lawyers in Alabama have had a CLS affiliation for many years, our city Chapter has only been in existence since late 2003.

We generally meet for breakfast quarterly, in January, April, August, and November. Our past speakers at these meetings have included several members of the Alabama judiciary. Students from the Cumberland School of Law often attend our meetings. Indeed, we are currently working to establish a mentor relationship with the Cumberland student chapter. Additionally, believing that, as Christians, we are to serve our neighbors through our profession, we are working to establish a Legal Aid program in our area.

Our Chapter currently has three officers: a President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer. These officers serve one-year terms and may be re-elected to serve consecutive terms. We currently have six Members serving on our Board of Directors. Our Board members also serve one-year terms. Christian Legal Society of Birmingham adheres to the CLS Statement of Faith.

Trusting in Jesus Christ as our Savior, we believe in:

One God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
The Deity of our Lord, Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary; His vicarious death for our sins through which we receive eternal life; His bodily resurrection and personal return.
The presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the work of regeneration.
The Bible as the inspired Word of God.
