LSM Mission
How is Law Student Ministries undertaking the vital task of reaching the next generation of lawyers for Christ? In ministering to students contemplating careers in the law, LSM seeks to achieve two fundamental goals:

  • To establish vibrant CLS-affiliated student chapters at every law school in the nation and at prominent Christian colleges.
  • To nurture CLS student chapters by providing mentors and resources aimed at fostering spiritual growth, compassionate outreach, and the integration of faith and practice.
To accomplish these two goals, LSM is implementing a Threefold Ministry Model based upon Christ's command:

  • "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matt. 22:37-40
This declaration compels Christian fellowships to cultivate a heart for "knowing God" (Jer. 9:23-24) and for serving our neighbors. It entails three interrelated activities to be carried out by CLS student chapters:

  • Spiritual Formation:Cultivating spiritual growth through communal prayer, fellowship, and worship; learning to share one's faith; and devotional study of the Bible and classic Christian works.
  • Compassionate Outreach: Showing the love of Christ to the campus community by proclaiming the gospel in word and in deed, such as through a life of integrity and charitable good works, or as Martin Luther put it, "to be as Christ to our neighbor."
Christian Calling: Addressing the question, "What does it mean to be a Christian in law?", that is, submitting every aspect of one's calling in the legal profession to Christ's authority.

    Enabling Students to do Justice
    with the Love of God

Law Student Ministries (LSM) -- one of the four ministries of the Christian Legal Society (CLS) -- is the only national ministry committed in a concerted way to reaching the nation's law school campuses for Christ. Located in our national headquarters in Annandale VA, LSM disciples the next generation of lawyers for Christ by supporting Christian law fellowships or student groups at over 160 law schools and at a handful of strategic Christian colleges. In carrying out this mission, LSM affirms that the Lord, "a God of justice" (Isa. 30:18), is the supreme lawgiver and that His "higher" law serves as an immutable standard by which to assess human "positive" law. LSM's logo, which depicts Michelangelo's majestic sculpture of Moses holding the Decalogue or two tables of the law, stands as a constant reminder of this truth.

A Growing Ministry with Great Potential

Law Student Ministries came into existence as a separate division of the Christian Legal Society in early 1997. Although CLS has served law students for many years, it began to significantly expand its ministry to students in the mid-1990s because of the conviction that American law, founded on Judeo-Christian principles, has undergone alarming deterioration in the last half of the twentieth century. American legal education has systematically dismantled these traditional principles and in their place has exalted naturalistic and utilitarian philosophies premised upon the tenets that transcendent moral truth does not exist and that law is therefore merely procedure based on power.

    The Challenge Ahead

The importance of CLS's decision to expand its ministry to law students cannot be overemphasized. LSM recognizes that the law now stands at the center of America's future and that, given the twilight of transcendence in the legal profession, law students desiring to submit every aspect of their calling to the Lord are confronted with serious challenges. LSM therefore regards the next generation of lawyers as a strategic people group and counts it a privilege to reach out to pre-law and law students now, so that the legal profession will include Christian voices in the future. By virtue of their callings, many of these students will eventually hold prominent leadership positions in society and will have the opportunity, if adequately equipped, to glorify God and work for His kingdom in this world. Having reflected on the ominous trends threatening the nation and our churches, LSM is convinced that no more important task exists than, "Enabling Students to do Justice with the Love of God."
